In an electrifying showdown that had fans on the edge of their seats, Leonora Primary triumphed over St John the Baptist in a heart-stopping sudden-death penalty shootout, claiming the coveted Courts Optical Pee-Wee Football Championship title at the Ministry of Education Ground on Saturday evening.

The tension was palpable as Leonora and St John the Baptist went toe-to-toe, ultimately culminating in a dramatic sudden-death scenario. With a nail-biting score of 6-5, Leonora emerged victorious, leaving their fans in a frenzy of joy and celebration!

The match kicked off with high energy, and it was Jonathan Melvin who electrified the crowd, netting an impressive goal in the 17th minute to give Leonora the early advantage. However, the drama intensified when St John the Baptist fought back valiantly. In a nail-biting twist, they earned a penalty late in the second half, which Aaron Christian converted with ice-cold precision in the 55th minute, leveling the score at 1-1 and sending the game into the nerve-wracking extra-time followed by the penalty lottery.

The championship finale also spotlighted some standout performers. Jonathan Melvin of Leonora was crowned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his stellar contributions throughout the tournament. Meanwhile, Aaron Christian from St John the Baptist showcased his scoring prowess, earning the title of Highest Goal-Scorer with an impressive 12 goals in the competition. Akeem Johnson, also from Leonora, was recognized as the Best Goalkeeper, solidifying the team’s remarkable performance.

Tournament MVP, Jonathan Melvin of Leonora Primary makes a move during the final.

Earlier in the day, the third-place playoff saw West Ruimveldt Primary secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Redeemer Primary, with Ceon Rajkumar delivering the decisive strike in the 37th minute.

In recognition of their outstanding efforts, the top three teams were awarded trophies, medals, and even flat-screen televisions, while individual prize winners walked away with vouchers, smartphones, and shiny trophies.
