Secondary Schools receive prizes from ExxonMobil Under-14 Football Championships

Several secondary schools across Guyana received their prizes for the recently concluded ExxonMobil Under-14 Boys and Girls Football Championships on Thursday at a prize-giving ceremony held at the Ministry of Education ground.
The competition, which wrapped up in July, saw Bartica Secondary from Region Seven take home the championship in the Girls’ tournament, while Chase’s Academic Foundation successfully defended their title in the Boys’ division during two thrilling finales.
C0-director of the Petra Organisation and organizer of the tournament, Troy Mendonca, emphasized its significance in the development of young athletes. He reflected on the “hard work” involved in coordinating the tournament and highlighted its role in youth football development, noting that “many players in national teams have participated in this competition.”
Ryan Hoppie, ExxonMobil’s Community Relations Supervisor, announced plans to deepen their involvement in youth development by integrating sports with STEM education. He explained the importance of balancing sports with education to create well-rounded individuals who can thrive in various fields, from sports to academia and beyond.
The prize distribution was substantial, with the tournament winners receiving $400,000 each, while the second, third, and fourth places earned $200,000, $100,000, and $75,000, respectively.
