Need for Speed Championship finds new home at Thomas Lands

June 6 2026
The opening round of the highly anticipated Need for Speed Karting Championship will now roar into action at the GMR&SC facility at Thomas Lands after organizers confirmed a late venue switch.
Initially slated for a West Bank Demerara location, the championship was relocated due to ongoing renovation works that have impacted preparations at the original circuit.
Event officials explained that construction-related activities prevented the completion of crucial track works within the timeline required to conduct mandatory safety assessments and final event preparations.
“The venue will be undergoing routine renovations, and we will not be able to complete the necessary track preparation within the stipulated time for safety testing,” organizers stated.
Faced with the challenge, the organizing committee moved quickly to secure an alternative venue and settled on the GMR&SC’s Albert Street facility, citing its proven track record in hosting motorsport events.
“As such, our management team decided that we needed to look for an alternative venue and we thought of no better place than the home of motorsport, the GMR&SC Thomas Lands facility,” a spokesperson said.
Organizers noted that while development work continues at the original venue, the Thomas Lands circuit offers an ideal setting for competitors and fans, ensuring the championship gets underway without interruption.
Additionally, the Meet and Greet activity that was scheduled for West Central Mall has been postponed. A replacement date will be announced at a later time.
The Need for Speed Karting Championship is expected to feature many of Guyana’s leading young drivers as they begin their quest for season-long championship success.
