Minister of Education, Sonia Parag, this morning delivered an inspiring address to the new cohort of trainee teachers at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), urging them to embrace their calling as nation builders with dedication and pride.

In her remarks, Minister Parag emphasized that teaching is one of the most transformative professions, and that every educator plays a crucial role in shaping Guyana’s future. She highlighted that education is not static but a continuous process of growth — both for teachers and their students.

The Minister noted that the Government of Guyana’s strategic investments in teacher education have yielded remarkable progress, with 98% of teachers now trained through CPCE, compared to 68% in 2020.

Minister Parag also announced several new initiatives to further strengthen teacher preparation. For the first time, CPCE will offer specialized programmes in Geography, History, Chemistry, Physics, French, Portuguese, and Health and Family Life Education. Additionally, a one-year training programme for Guidance and Counselling Officers and a six-week course designed to help teachers support children with special needs will be launched.

Encouraging the trainees to embody integrity, professionalism, and compassion, Minister Parag reminded them that their work extends beyond academics — they are shaping the moral and emotional foundation of the next generation.

“As teachers, your task is invaluable,” she said. “Teach with passion, serve with pride, and inspire with purpose. Your students become your children — nurture them as such.”

Minister Parag congratulated the new cohort for choosing the teaching profession and assured them of the Ministry’s continued support as they embark on their journey at CPCE, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to advancing quality education for all.
