A 48-year-old man who had recently assisted the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts as a Spanish translator has been sentenced to four months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to a larceny charge.

The defendant, Sunil Adnarine, appeared before Magistrate Annette Singh, where he admitted to stealing construction equipment valued at $148,000, the property of Colin Talbot Construction, between September 15 and 16, at Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown.

According to the facts presented, on the evening of September 16, Adnarine was caught at the construction site by a security guard.

He admitted to the guard that he had removed items, prompting the guard to alert the police.

The prosecutor told the court that around 5:00 p.m. on the day of the incident, the security guard, who was assigned to ensure all equipment remained intact, discovered Adnarine at an excavator attempting to remove a battery.

The accused was subsequently detained and handed over to police, where he admitted to the offence. However, no items were recovered.

In addressing the court, Adnarine claimed that he had only stolen a single battery and insisted that he was beaten and wrongly accused of stealing other equipment.

In determining the sentence, Magistrate Singh began with a starting point of nine months’ imprisonment.

She deducted three months for Adnarine’s early guilty plea, noting that it saved the court’s time.

A further two months were subtracted in recognition of his prior assistance to the court, where he had volunteered as a translator for a Spanish-speaking defendant.

As a result, Adnarine was sentenced to serve four months in prison.
