Police Seize and Destroy Millions Worth of Cannabis in Multiple Operations

The Guyana Police Force’s Narcotics Branch has intensified its anti-drug campaign, uncovering and destroying massive quantities of cannabis in a series of operations across the Hitia Savannahs and Upper Berbice River.
81.2 Pounds of Cannabis Found at Hitia Savannahs
During a patrol between 04:30 hrs and 19:40 hrs on Tuesday, police ranks detected a strong scent of cannabis near a bridge in the Hitia Savannahs. A subsequent search led to the discovery of three bulky plastic bags hidden in nearby bushes. The bags contained 81.2 pounds of cannabis, which was lodged with the Officer in Charge of the Narcotics Branch.
$3.3M Cannabis Field Destroyed Along Wiruni Creek
Later that day, between 16:00 hrs and 18:00 hrs, a separate team uncovered a three-acre cannabis field along Wiruni Creek, Upper Berbice River. Approximately 10,000 plants ranging from two to five feet in height were destroyed by fire. The eradicated narcotics were valued at $3,388,000.
$237M in Cannabis Plants and Dried Marijuana Burned
In another operation along Wiruni Creek between 09:30 hrs and 13:00 hrs on Tuesday, police destroyed a five-acre field with 2,000 cannabis plants. A nearby makeshift camp and drying area were also dismantled. Inside, ranks found 580 pounds of dried cannabis. The total value of the destroyed narcotics was estimated at $237,452,624.
$571M Cannabis Bust in Wiruni Savannahs – Firearm Seized
In the largest operation of the day, carried out between 04:00 hrs and 07:30 hrs in the Wiruni Savannahs, police discovered an eight-acre plot prepared for cultivation, along with a camp containing 1,400 pounds of dried cannabis. The narcotics, valued at $571,525,920, were destroyed on site.
During the search, an unlicensed 12-gauge shotgun and nine cartridges were also seized. The firearm has since been handed over to the Ballistics Section of the Police Force.
Ongoing Crackdown
The Guyana Police Force has described these operations as part of its continued effort to dismantle drug networks, cut off supply routes, and suppress large-scale marijuana cultivation in remote areas.
