Contractor on $250,000 Bail for House Lot Fraud

August 18 2025
A 38-year-old Bath, West Coast Berbice contractor is out on $250,000 bail after being charged with defrauding a woman of more than $1 million under the guise of obtaining house lots for her.
Terbhawan Ramjit of Lot 126 Bath appeared before Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Friday.
He pleaded not guilty to the allegation.
Prosecutors claim that between June 1 and July 31, 2025, in Georgetown, Ramjit took $1,030,000 from Nalini Ramcharan while falsely representing that he could secure three house lots on her behalf.
Investigators say he was never in a position to deliver on that promise.
In seeking bail, attorney Jevon Cox told the court that his client has no prior convictions or pending matters, is not a flight risk, and “completely denies” the charge.
The prosecution opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the accusation and the large sum of money involved. The prosecutor further argued that the nature of the case could influence the accused not to return to court.
He recommended that, should bail be granted, Ramjit be required to post a significant sum and report monthly to the Brickdam Police Station.
Magistrate Singh granted bail in the sum requested by the defence but imposed the reporting condition, ordering Ramjit to present himself to the Brickdam Police Station on the last Friday of every month.
The case will be called again on September 26, 2025.
