February 6 2025 – A 50-year-old man has been sentenced to two years in prison and fined $7,500 after pleading guilty to possessing five grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Ray Peters, who was arrested last Friday, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Wednesday to answer the charge.

According to the prosecution, Peters was spotted acting suspiciously by police officers who were patrolling the Stabroek Market area in Georgetown.

The officers approached him and conducted a search, during which Peters allegedly dropped a parcel containing a brick-like substance. The substance was later confirmed to be cocaine.

Peters, who did not have legal representation, admitted to the charge of drug possession for trafficking. In court, he explained that he used the drug to alleviate back pain, although he acknowledged that he knew it was illegal.

Before delivering the sentence, Magistrate Mc Gusty explained to Peters that his criminal actions warranted a custodial sentence. Peters acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, confirming that he understood the implications of his actions.

In determining the appropriate sentence, Magistrate Mc Gusty took into account Peters’s age, his early guilty plea, and the serious nature of the offence, as well as the widespread issue of drug trafficking.

As a result, Peters was sentenced to two years in prison and fined $7,500.
