A 30-year-old taxi driver accused of fatally stabbing a Georgetown mechanic during a midday confrontation earlier this month has been remanded to prison.

Keon Belgrave of B Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday, where he was charged with the July 4 murder of 26-year-old Jamal Greene.

Dead: Jamal Greene

The court heard that the incident stemmed from an altercation that escalated at the intersection of Robb and Albert Streets, in the heart of the capital.

Belgrave was not required to plead to the indictable charge. In the end, the murder accused was remanded to prison.

The accused, who was represented by attorney-at-law Dawn Cush, is scheduled to return to court on July 30.

The fatal encounter unfolded shortly after 13:30 hrs. According to investigators, Greene, a mechanic of D’Urban Street, Lodge, Georgetown, had been traveling on a motorcycle behind a car driven by the accused.

Both men were reportedly heading south along Albert Street, Georgetown, when Greene rode up alongside the vehicle and made a comment suggesting that the driver should have struck him.

Greene then stopped his motorcycle, prompting the taxi driver to also come to a halt. Police said an eyewitness, who was at a nearby business, reported seeing Greene armed with an iron bar, which he allegedly used to hit Belgrave in the back.

The taxi driver reportedly responded by arming himself with a knife and confronting the mechanic. A struggle ensued between the two men, ending when Greene was stabbed multiple times in the back.

The injured mechanic was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation by emergency responders but succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

Police recovered both the knife and the iron rod from the scene. Investigators also obtained surveillance footage from nearby cameras that reportedly captured the confrontation and the moment both men collapsed onto the roadway.

Belgrave was taken into custody at the scene and treated for minor injuries.

In a subsequent interview with detectives, he allegedly admitted to stabbing Greene but maintained that he acted in self-defence after being attacked and pursued.
