Epilepsy Foundation of Guyana Celebrates 10th Anniversary

November 11, 2024 – The Epilepsy Foundation of Guyana (EFG) commemorated its 10th anniversary on Saturday with an evening dedicated to education and celebration, featuring a Continuing Medical Education (CME) session and an appreciation dinner at the Herdmanston Lodge.
The event gathered healthcare professionals, community leaders, and distinguished guests in a unified effort to increase awareness and improve support for individuals living with epilepsy.
Epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterized by recurring seizures, impacts millions worldwide. Despite its prevalence, many still face stigma and a lack of resources. The EFG, founded in 2014, has been Guyana’s sole organization dedicated to advocating for people with epilepsy and providing resources to enhance their quality of life.
The EFG, in a press statement indicated that the evening began with a CME session led by neurologists Dr. Jarrell Watson, Dr. Jason Ramcharan, and Dr. Alex Persaud, offering the latest advancements and best practices in epilepsy care.
Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony, who delivered opening remarks, commended the Foundation’s critical work. “The Epilepsy Foundation of Guyana has played a crucial role in addressing an often overlooked health concern. We must continue to strengthen partnerships to expand epilepsy support and awareness,” he said.
Dr. Thomas Singh, Founder and President of the EFG, shared his personal journey with epilepsy, which inspired him to create the organization. “When I started the EFG, my vision was to create a haven and a voice for people with epilepsy. Ten years later, I am proud of the impact we’ve made through dedication and community support,” Dr. Singh said.
Over the past decade, the EFG has become a trusted resource affiliated with the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE), offering advocacy, education, and support services.
The Foundation’s leadership team, including Vice President Deidre Ifill, Secretary and former President Dr. Mallika Mootoo, and other dedicated board members, has worked tirelessly to deliver educational programs, outreach initiatives, and community support.
Heartfelt testimonials during the evening highlighted the transformative role the EFG has played in the lives of many Guyanese living with epilepsy.
The event concluded with an appreciation dinner and awards ceremony, recognizing longstanding supporters and business partners whose contributions have sustained the Foundation’s mission. Honourees included Republic Bank, Jacob’s Jewellery, former West Indies cricketer Ramnaresh Sarwan, Philip Fernandes, Axess Guyana Inc., New GPC Inc., Shi-Oil, and Massy Stores.
Dr. Singh emphasized the need for more partners and supporters to continue the Foundation’s mission of promoting epilepsy awareness and care. “Our work is made possible by those who believe in our cause and help us create lasting change. We hope more organizations and individuals will join us in advancing epilepsy awareness and support.”
Looking ahead, the Epilepsy Foundation of Guyana remains committed to expanding its outreach, improving public understanding of epilepsy, and enhancing access to care. Currently, the EFG partners with TeleEEG, a UK-based charity, to provide electroencephalogram (EEG) tests and offers free KEPPRA tablets donated by the ROW and HERO foundations.
