Culture Ministry buckles; Daphne’s funeral to be held at NCC tarmac

It was only after social media outrage over the denial to have the funeral of the late “culturalist” and educator Daphne Rogers B.Ed, A A be facilitated at the National Culture Centre tarmac, that the Ministry of Culture granted permission.

Rogers, a former teacher also, passed away earlier this week. On his Facebook page, veteran journalist Enrico Woolford posted that “it is sad, upsetting and unsettling that the family of  was denied permission” to use the forecourt/tarmac of the National Cultural Centre for Roger’s funeral service slated for next week.

“Ms. Rogers served that institution as administrator for nearly two decades. She maintained standards there, and kept the place in pristine condition under the circumstances.

She was there since Guyana hosted the first Carifesta in 1972,” Woolford said as he spoke of Rogers contributions to Guyana, “She was a member of the Costume Committee for the Country’s Independence Celebrations in 1966, Ms. Rogers B. Ed, A A also served as the Administrator of the National Dance School and Company.”

In a public statement on his Facebook Page, Minister of Culture Charles Ramson said that he has “instructed” his ministry to approve the application, ” It has been brought to my attention that permission had been sought for the funeral of the late Ms Daphne Rogers A.A. to be held at the forecourt of the National Cultural Centre. I have just instructed the Ministry to approve this application with the expectation that the Covid-19 guidelines will be followed.”
