Guyana Dismisses Venezuelan Essequibo Elections as Failed Propaganda

May 29 2025– The Government of Guyana has rejected Venezuela’s recent attempt to hold elections for officials in the Essequibo region—territory that is internationally recognized as part of Guyana.

According to a press briefing held by Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, he described the May 25 event as a complete failure and a continuation of Venezuela’s baseless propaganda campaign.

“Nobody wants to be part of Venezuela” the VP said.

The elections, organized by the Venezuelan government, purported to appoint a governor and other officials to oversee Guyana’s Essequibo region. However, Guyanese authorities made clear that the process had no legitimacy and no participation from Guyanese citizens.

In response to a video shared by Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez claiming that Guyanese were crossing into Venezuela to vote, officials confirmed the footage was misrepresented. The video reportedly showed people crossing the Demerara River in Georgetown, with the Stabroek Market visible in the background—clearly unrelated to the Venezuelan elections.

Government officials emphasized that the Essequibo region remains an integral part of Guyana’s territory and that no amount of political maneuvering or misinformation will alter that fact.

The move by Venezuela has been widely viewed as an attempt to fabricate legitimacy over a long-disputed area that remains at the center of a case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
