VP Backs Strong Enforcement Against Looters and Lawbreakers

May 8 2025– Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has endorsed firm action by law enforcement against individuals involved in looting and other unlawful acts during last month’s unrest in Georgetown.

Speaking at his weekly press conference, VP Jagdeo explained that his stance comes amid an ongoing crackdown that has resulted in dozens of arrests and court proceedings across the country.

The Vice President emphasized that enforcement should apply uniformly, regardless of political affiliation, and pointed to the substantial video evidence authorities have gathered showing suspects engaged in acts of looting, violence, and destruction.

The recent unrest, which stemmed from public outrage over the death of 11-year-old Adriana Younge, led to widespread disruptions across the capital.

Protesters blocked roads, set debris ablaze, and looted several businesses in scenes of chaos that unfolded over several days.

The Guyana Police Force has confirmed that over 100 individuals were arrested nationwide in relation to the disturbances.

Many of those arrested have since been charged under the Criminal Law (Offences) Act.
