Commissioner, DCIO Visit Immigration Ranks at CJIA Amid Corruption Probe

September 29, 2025 – Commissioner of Police and Chief Immigration Officer Clifton Hicken, accompanied by Deputy Chief Immigration Officer Senior Superintendent Stephen Telford, on Monday visited the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) to meet with immigration ranks stationed at the country’s main port of entry.
The high-level visit followed recent allegations that police ranks at CJIA demanded money from a passenger in exchange for the release of her lawful belongings.
According to police, CCTV footage and supporting evidence confirm aspects of the complaint, and the implicated officers have since been placed under close arrest. The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is currently leading a full investigation into the matter.
In response to the allegations, the Government of Guyana has directed that, effective immediately, all law enforcement officers stationed at ports of entry—including airports and border points—must be equipped with body cameras to strengthen accountability and transparency.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on corruption, warning that any officer found guilty of extortion or bribery will face the full force of the law.
Authorities further reminded the travelling public that no payments are required to clear lawful items at CJIA or any other port of entry. Passengers are urged to report any attempts at solicitation of money to the nearest police authority.
