April 11 2025–

The Ministry of Housing and Water has launched its 60th “Dream Realised” Housing Drive at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, aiming to allocate 1,600 house lots over a two-day period from April 11 to 12.

This initiative forms part of the government’s strategic housing plan for 2020–2025 and is focused on reducing the national housing backlog by delivering affordable housing solutions.

Minister within the Ministry, Susan Rodrigues, noted that this allocation specifically targets applicants from Region Four who applied in 2019 or earlier.

She emphasized that the activity is in line with the ministry’s ongoing efforts to address longstanding applications, especially those that date back several years. Region Four, being the largest in the country, also has the highest demand for housing, with about 48,000 pending applications currently under review.

On the first day of the housing drive, approximately 1,000 house lots are being allocated to low- and moderate-income applicants, while the remaining 600, scheduled for the second day, are set aside for middle- and high-income earners.

The lots are located in the second phase of housing developments along the East Coast of Demerara, in communities such as Success, Chateau Margot, Le Ressouvenir, and Felicity. Infrastructure works have already begun, with contractors mobilizing to prepare the areas for occupancy. Beneficiaries are expected to access their lands by the end of 2025.

Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, highlighted the ministry’s achievements since 2020, noting that over 44,000 house lots have been allocated so far and the target of 50,000 will likely be surpassed before the end of the year. He shared that the ministry currently handles around 300 individuals daily, including new applicants and those seeking updates or resolving issues.

Minister Croal also mentioned that the allocations taking place during this event represent about 65 percent of Region Four’s total allocations, and he urged applicants to remain patient as every concern will be addressed in due course.

In addition to house lot allocations, the Ministry is distributing over 500 Land Title Certificates and Transports during the event. These documents are being issued to residents from communities such as Non Pariel, De Endragt, Bladen Hall, La Reconnaissance, Strathspey, La Bonne Intention, Annandale, Cummings Lodge, Industry, and Good Hope. This distribution is part of the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to providing legal land ownership and improving access to financial services for home construction.

Furthermore, nearly 70 beneficiaries of the Steel and Cement Housing Subsidy programme will receive vouchers to support the building of their homes. Financial institutions and insurance companies are also present at the event to assist new allottees with mortgage financing and related services, further supporting their journey to homeownership.
