April 2 2025– A 27-year-old prison officer has been remanded to prison after being charged with narcotics possession and introducing prohibited items into the Lusignan Prison.

Aaron Willis, a resident of Lot 612 Haslington New Scheme, East Coast Demerara, and an officer attached to the Lusignan Prison, was arrested by ranks of the Vigilance Police Station. He was charged with two offences:

Introducing Prohibited Articles into Prison – Contrary to Section 53(1)(a) of the Prison Act 11:01.

Possession of Narcotics for the Purpose of Trafficking – Contrary to Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Control Act, Chapter 10:10. The charge relates to 243.3 grams of cannabis found in his possession.

Willis appeared on Wednesday at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court #1 before Magistrate Sunil Scarce.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges but was denied bail and remanded to prison.

The matter has been adjourned to May 19, 2025, for further proceedings. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
