SOCU throws Sergeant in lockups after failed 'Mohamed Sting Operation'

July 04, 2025

By Leroy Smith

After a prolonged period of stalling, malicious acts of harassment, and refusals to include key and accurate statements and materials into their case jacket regarding the matter of Cavlin Brutus, whom the Special Organised Crime Unit charged for Misconduct in Public Office, Brutus has applied to the court to cause Republic Bank Guyana Limited to make available to him as the accused in the matter, key documents and materials which are vital for him to be defended in the court properly and which SOCU has from the start of the court proceedings last year, refused to hand over. The application to the court was made on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

Since Calvin Brutus was charged by SOCU in 2024, it performed several maneuvers, aimed at hook-winkling systems and other agencies into its plot to name, shame, and discredit Brutus and his wife. SOCU was successful in having them charged and placed before the courts. Now that the duo is before the courts, SOCU is finding it extremely and painstakingly difficult to prosecute the husband and wife along with their driver.

Calvin Brutus, in his application, is asking the court to rule that Republic Bank and SOCU had over the records for the Guyana Police Force Welfare Fund between January 01, 2021, and December 31, 2024. The records will show that while SOCU charged and determined that Brutus’s decision to pay his wife’s company from that fund for goods and services provided to the Guyana Police Force, Brutus wants to show the court that the fund was also used to pay other suppliers and service providers also and that the force has been engaging in this practice for decades before him and that even after he has left the force, the pracice is continuing.

SOCU, under panic, objected to the request, but that was shot down by the magistrate, who said that Brutus had been asking for the records since the beginning of 2025. With nowhere to run, SOCU then asks the court for time to respond to Brutus in writing. They have also asked the court to reduce the period for which Brutus is seeking documents.

It should be noted that several things which are in the Calvin Brutus case Jacket before the court were said to be manufactured, altered, and manipulated to make a case against him that will stick. If, after hearing SOCU’s arguments on July 18, 2025, the magistrate rules that the bank must hand over the documents requested, it could be a major blow up in the face of SOCU, its level of professionalism when conducting investigations and could also affect the issue of public trust in the entity which many have alleged is now a weaponized to go after individuals who operatives within SOCU have personal issues with.

It should also be noted that while Brutus was charged for paying his wife’s company from the Police Welfare Fund, the relative of a government minister was also paid from the same fund in the millions for goods and services supplied to the force.
