Woman Detective Sergeant 20846 Melanie Hale is the Guyana Police’s Best Cop. Hale was awarded on Thursday for solving several high profile murders and arrests that led to charges the Guyana Police Force said on Thursday. Hale is one of several officers who were awarded at a small ceremony on Thursday in keeping with COVID-19 measures. Detective Sergeant 20310 Leon George received the runner up prize. He was instrumental solving several robberies, murders, seizures of narcotics and also dismantling a ring of persons who were involved in the theft of motor cars the Force said.

In thanking the Force’s Administration, Hale highlighted her award as a sign of gender equality, in the body, “it shows clearly that there is gender equality in the Guyana Police Force and it is evident that women can be just as disciplined, efficient, hardworking, professional and above all productive as their male counterparts in the field of Law enforcement,” she said.

Commissioner of Police (ag) Nigel Hoppie described the performance as credible despite what he said were challenges this year, ” however, despite these challenges and experiences the Force has performed credibly, in spite of some unsavoury incidents, and has been able to maintain a safe and secure environment within the country. We are aware that more needs to be done, but we are also aware that we have prevailed,” Commissioner Hoppie said.

The Force in a release said that some 2997 police ranks were awarded with more than $23 million in cash and other incentives for “their outstanding work and dedication to service”. These include officers from all 10 Administrative Regions who received monies and plaques for work in crime fighting, anti-narcotics exercises, traffic control and enhancing the safety of their communities in which they serve, the Force said.
