AGRI Min Inspects Ongoing Upgrades at Meadow Bank Wharf

18 October 2024 – Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha visited the Meadow Bank Wharf on Friday to inspect ongoing enhancement works being carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture.

This visit follows a prior site tour with President Dr. Irfaan Ali, during which the Head of State pledged improvements to the facility after meeting with fish vendors and workers.

So far, several upgrades have been completed, including the installation of lights, new washroom facilities, and the establishment of a police outpost. Additionally, ongoing projects such as the resurfacing of the tarmac, installation of a water system, and construction of concrete drains, a new wharf, and vending sheds are expected to be finalized in the coming months.

Minister Mustapha noted that approximately $190 million is being invested in these upgrades to improve the popular fishing hub in Georgetown.

“This is one of the main fishing areas in Georgetown, operating almost on a 24-hour system. A lot of people come here to buy and sell fish and other fresh seafood,” Minister Mustapha stated. “When the President and I visited, he committed to significant upgrades to improve security and functionality. We’ve already upgraded the washroom facilities, installed a water system, and added lights. The police outpost is in place to enhance security. I hope the additional work will be completed within the next month or two.”

The improvements are expected to significantly boost operations at the wharf, ensuring a safer and more efficient environment for vendors, customers, and workers.
