Court bars Brutus and pregnant wife overseas trip for medical attention

High Court Judge Justice Jino Persaud on Friday denied an application of Assistant Commissioner of Police Calvin Brutus to leave the jurisdiction of Guyana to accompany his pregnant wife to seek medical attention overseas.
After listening to arguments and reviewing submissions, Justice Jino Persaud determined that given the amount of money involved in the probe being conducted by the Special Organised Crime Unit, permission to leave the jurisdiction would not be granted.
The court heard on Friday SOCU is investigating alleged crimes by Brutus relating to finance. A total of Eight Hundred Million Guyana Dollars, of that amount, it was noted that Three Hundred Million is said to be in assets and properties while the other Five Hundred Million is jointly held between Brutus and his wife in bank accounts, currently frozen by an earlier court order.
In Court today, it was announced that SOCU has pending 240 charges under the Anti-money Laundering Act, the police act, the police disciplinary, and other acts to bring against Assistant Commissioner of Police Calvin Brutus.
Brutus has been ordered to pay $250,000 in court costs.
