Two lives disrupted as parking spot argument leaves one dead

DEAD: Quincy Weeks

A simple argument between two villagers from the community of Mocha on the East Bank of Demerara has disrupted the lives of themselves and their families as one is now dead and the other in police custody.

Dead is 41-year-old taxi driver Quincy Weeks of 31 Nelson Street Mocha while 28-year-old Troy Griffith, also a taxi driver of Lot 6 Carol’s Place Mocha will now have to condition his mind to live a life of confinement behind bars.

On Wednesday morning while at the head of the Mocha Access Road and Providence Public Road sometime around 08:00hrs, the two had an argument over parking space as they both work taxis in the area and ply a route from the Mocha Access Road front into the Mocha village.

The police are of the view that an earlier misunderstanding between the two over five hundred Guyana Dollars might have also had a part to play in the incidents of Wednesday morning escalating much faster.

On Wednesday morning after the men began arguing about parking space, Griffith armed himself with a knife and dealt Weeks several stabs causing him to fall.

Just like at the junction of Red Road Providence and other car parks where several persons operate cars for hire, there is also a stiff competition between drivers for parking and fulling first as each seeks to accumulate more trips per day than other drivers.

When police detectives arrived at the scene, Weeks was found lying in blood on the road shoulder in a face-up position. It was determined that four stab wounds were inflicted on the deceased to his hands, under the left shoulder, and lower chest.

Griffith was arrested and then taken for medical attention following which he was returned to the police station and processed.
