Recently appointed magistrates underwent an extensive orientation program facilitated by the Supreme Court of Judicature, following their swearing-in ceremony.

The eight-day course aimed to prepare them for their judicial roles and responsibilities.

During the program, Chief Justice Madam Justice Roxane George, emphasized the importance of integrity, competence, efficiency, and effectiveness (ICEE) in their roles.

Magistrates were reminded that their behavior both on and off the bench is significant, with an emphasis on maintaining respect and decorum.

Various stakeholders, including the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecution, the Guyana Prison Service, Survivors Advocates, Probation Service, and the Child Care and Protection Agency, made presentations outlining the relationship between the courts and these entities.

At the conclusion of the orientation, the newly appointed magistrates were assigned to sit with experienced magistrates before being assigned to their own courts.

The nine attorneys-at-law who were selected to serve as magistrates are:

Mr. Omadat Chandan

Ms. Tamieka Clarke

Ms. Abigail Gibbs

Ms. Tuanna Hardy

Ms. Shivani Lalaram

Ms. Michelle Matthias

Ms. Orinthia Schmidt

They took their oaths of office before Prime Minister Brigadier (R’td) Mr. Mark Phillips on February 20, 2024. The orientation program provided them with the necessary tools and insights to fulfill their duties effectively in the judicial system.

The objectives of the orientation program encompassed several key areas: I. Ensuring adherence to judicial ethics as fundamental principles; II.

Providing insights into essential aspects of the judicial role; III. Facilitating a smooth transition from practicing law to presiding on the bench; IV. Emphasizing the significance of ongoing legal education and awareness; V. Offering guidance on administrative procedures; VI. Stressing the importance of maintaining judicial well-being.

The program featured a comprehensive itinerary, including: Understanding the judicial environment, Effective courtroom management, Adjudication in civil litigation, Importance of disclosure in legal proceedings, Sentencing guidelines etc.
