Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred early Wednesday morning (August 27, 2025) at the intersection of the Eastern Carriageway of Heroes Highway and the Mocha Main Access Road, East Bank Demerara.

The crash, which happened around 05:30 hrs, involved motor lorry #GAH 9771, driven by 29-year-old Arif Haniff of Cove and John, East Coast Demerara, and motor car #PAH 7906, driven by 64-year-old Charles Richards of Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, Georgetown.

Investigations revealed that Richards was driving east along the Mocha Main Access Road when he reportedly failed to stop at the intersection’s designated stop sign and line, proceeding into the path of the southbound lorry. The resulting collision left both vehicles extensively damaged.

Richards sustained severe head and body injuries. Emergency Medical Technicians responded but pronounced him dead at the scene. His body was later taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.

A Licensing and Certifying Officer examined both vehicles. A Notice of Intended Prosecution was served on the lorry driver, who was subjected to a breathalyser test that returned negative for alcohol. Haniff is currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations.
