30 EBD SQUATTERS PRESENTED WITH KEYS TO NEW HOMES

A significant transformation has taken place for 30 squatters who once inhabited makeshift dwellings along the East Bank Demerara (EBD) river dam.

Now, situated in the thriving community of Diamond, EBD, these individuals have transitioned from precarious living conditions to proud homeownership, ushering in a new era of safety and improved socio-economic well-being for themselves and their families.

The keys to their newfound comfort were presented by the Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal earlier today.

Each of the newly allocated homes comprises two bedrooms, spanning an area of 600 square feet, and are available at an average cost of $5.2M.

Additionally, these residences boast a well-designed layout featuring a spacious living room, a fully equipped kitchen, and a dedicated washroom area.

The incorporation of these amenities not only provides a sense of security but also ensures a comfortable and conducive living environment for the occupants.

The Ministry of Housing and Water has been actively engaging with approximately 291 squatters situated along the sea dam at various locations, including Herstelling, Farm, Covent Garden, Prospect, Diamond, Grove, and Friendship since the year 2021.

It is crucial to recognize that the sea dams in these areas are designated as zero-tolerance squatting zones.

This designation is driven by the imperative need to safeguard access routes and drainage systems, preventing potential flood risks and ensuring the overall safety of the residents.

According to the Ministry, the government’s commitment to addressing housing challenges and facilitating the transition from informal settlements to secure, planned communities is evident in these concerted efforts, ultimately contributing to the sustainable development of the region.

Remarkably, half of these settlers have already received land allocations in established housing schemes, marking a significant stride toward regularization.

Joining the Minister were Mr. Gladwin Charles, Director of Community Development, and engineers from the Projects Department of the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA).
