Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha engaged in a productive meeting with farmers and residents hailing from Enterprise and neighboring communities situated along the East Coast of Demerara.

During this interaction, he emphatically assured them that the agricultural sector in the region would not be overlooked or neglected.

Addressing the concerns expressed by the local community regarding the potential conversion of valuable farmlands into housing developments, Minister Mustapha conveyed the Ministry’s commitment to identifying and developing designated farming areas to safeguard the interests of farmers.

He underscored the importance of housing in alignment with the government’s developmental agenda while emphasizing a balanced approach that includes the simultaneous development of lands for both residential and agricultural purposes.

Minister Mustapha articulated the Ministry’s multi-faceted strategy, highlighting that lands are actively being earmarked for cash crop cultivation and livestock development.

Specifically, he disclosed that the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) is presently in the process of identifying suitable lands to establish a pasture dedicated to cattle, demonstrating the government’s commitment to livestock development.

Furthermore, Minister Mustapha announced initiatives aimed at supporting local farmers, such as the provision of free planting materials to bolster cultivation efforts. This proactive measure is intended to enhance the productivity and sustainability of agricultural practices in the region.

In a gesture of ongoing commitment and accountability, Minister Mustapha informed the gathering that a dedicated team from the Ministry is scheduled to revisit the area on Tuesday. Their mission is to address and follow up on the matters raised during the initial meeting, facilitating the development of a comprehensive work plan for future projects in the region. This strategic approach ensures that the concerns of the local community are not only acknowledged but also translated into actionable plans that align with the broader goals of agricultural and community development.
