Over 9.3kg of suspected cannabis seized in separate operations

More than 9.3 kilograms of suspected cannabis were seized during separate police operations in Georgetown and Region Three on Monday, with two men arrested in connection with the larger seizure.

The first discovery was made at about 9:40 p.m. on Cemetery Road, Georgetown, when police ranks, acting on information received, stopped a motor car occupied by two men, ages 25 and 24.

A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered two black garbage bags in the trunk containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.

The men, a 25-year-old construction worker of Rose Hall Town, Berbice, and a 24-year-old farmer of Eversham, East Corentyne, were arrested and taken to CID Headquarters along with the suspected drugs.

The substance was weighed in their presence and amounted to 9.20 kilograms before being lodged.

Earlier that day, police also recovered 148 grams of suspected cannabis during an operation in Meten-Meer-Zorg and Vergenoegen, West Coast Demerara.

During a search of an abandoned plot of land at Meten-Meer-Zorg, ranks reportedly found leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis concealed among bushes.

The substance was taken to CID Headquarters, weighed at 148 grams and lodged.

No arrests were made in connection with the Region Three seizure.

The two men arrested in Georgetown remain in custody as investigations into both discoveries continue.
