Police Constable in custody following gun threat in Westminster

A 29-year-old police constable has been placed under close arrest following an alleged incident involving a firearm-like object at Policeman Corner, Westminster, West Bank Demerara, on Monday night.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 8:30 p.m. and involved the constable and a 25-year-old Quality, Health, Safety and Environment officer of Phase One, Westminster.

According to a police report, the 25-year-old man was standing along the roadway with several other persons when a motor car approached and allegedly came close to colliding with his motorcycle.

An exchange reportedly followed, during which the police constable allegedly exited the vehicle, lifted his jersey and held what appeared to be a firearm at his waist.

The incident reportedly caused concern among those present.

Police subsequently intercepted the vehicle and identified the driver as a serving constable. A search was conducted, during which an object resembling a toy gun was reportedly found.

The constable was escorted to the La Parfaite Harmonie Police Station, where he was placed under close arrest pending further investigation.

Investigations are ongoing.
