Chandani Mohabir

Chandani Mohabir, also known as ‘Sonie’, the firewoman who was allegedly drunk when she crashed the motorcar she was driving into a motorcycle, resulting in the death of two-year-old Jasmine Ross, was on Tuesday slapped with a charge for causing death by dangerous driving.

Dead: Jasmine Ross

Mohabir, 28, of Lot 322 East Canefield, East Canje Berbice appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.

She was not required to plead to the indictable charge which read that on December 23, 2022, at Cumberland Public Road, East Canje Berbice, she drove motor car PGG 278 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Jasmine Ross.

The accused was granted bail in the sum of $400,000 and instructed to return to court on June 2, when her matter will be called at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court.

Mohabir, who is stationed at the New Amsterdam Fire Station, was driving the car when it collided with a motorcycle driven by Marley Ross, 29, with the now dead girl as the pillion rider, both of  Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam. Marley is the toddler’s father.

The accident occurred along the Cumberland, East Canje Public Road just around 15:30h. It was reported that the firewoman was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and speeding when she lost control of the car and slammed into the motorcycle.

As a result of the collision, the girl and her father were flung into the air. They fell on the eastern parapet and both sustained injuries to their bodies.

The three persons involved in the accident were rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where Ross was pronounced dead on arrival.

On December 30, 2022, Mohabir was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) and was released on $100,000 bail after pleading not guilty to the charge
