The last time Inter Milan featured in the finals of the Champions League was 12 years ago when they triumphed as champions of Europe. Inter Milan would get its revenge against AC Milan after a 20-year wait.
And so, it read, Inter Milan defeated AC Milan 3-0 on aggregate to advance to this year’s Champions League finals, where they will face the winner of the other semifinals being played between Real Madrid and Manchester City.
Inter Milan went into the tie needing just a draw to advance to the finals, having won the first leg surprisingly 2-0. AC Milan, who was without their star man Rafael Leao in this first leg, was boosted by his return for this match, so this match had all the promise of a great one.
Early on, AC Milan looked sure enough to make this game interesting when Theo Hernandez shot caught the goalkeeper by surprise, leaving him fixed to his line as the ball narrowly went over the bar inside the first 5 minutes of the game.
It was the home skipper who eventually found the breakthrough in a cagey second half with 16 minutes remaining. He exploited some space to the left of the goal before exchanging passes with substitute Romelu Lukaku and, with very little of the target to aim for, squeezed a low shot just inside Maignan’s near post.
