proper vetting of cops up for review amidst criminal involvement

Over the years the Guyana Police Force and by extension the Join Services have been faced with embarrassing incidents of its ranks becoming rascals after swearing and becoming part of the strength of the various organisations and taking oaths to serve, protect, defend and perform other duties, all aimed at contributing to a more secure society.
Ranks of those organisations have been fingered in murders, robberies, drugs and gun running, sex scandals, rape, abduction, fraud, corruption, perverting the course of justice and human rights violations and even abuse and battery.
On Sunday Minister of Public Security Khemraj was asked to comment on the most recent incident where a police rank attached to the Guyana Police Force Special Branch was among four bandits cornered on the East Bank Essequibo with one being shot dead, another hospitalised, one on the run.
“It happens not only within the Guyana Police Force but elsewhere and the vetting process will have to be reviewed and strengthen and so too will the recruitment process, we have to strengthen these but even so, the gates are never shut on the greedy” Ramjattan explained.
The Public Security Minister said the incident has indeed taken him by surprise also.
“Well you know this has taken me by surprise, such an officer doing that and I think of course we will have to take a second look at some of these things. It does seem that there are come characters within the police force especially that we really need to weed out, but I have said this before”
A visibly frustrated Ramjattan said that he guess it’s just a case now where we ought to expect some of these things happening but that they are not right.
Over the years, the joint services have had to part ways with some of their members who have turned rogue and landed the various services in embarrassing situation where they are then force to issue public statements condemning the acts of the individual(s) while seeking the public’s continued trust.
It is widely believed that the police force and then the prison service is most often caught with their pants down in these instances since it is their ranks who often deal with the general members of the public on a daily basis.
The Joint Service while not condoning these acts of its rogue members, would often seek to remind that the persons joining these agencies are the very people who are intake from the larger society and who are expected to alter their conduct and behaviors in keeping with the SOPs of the respect services.
