3-Y-O Girl Crushed by Metal Gate in Essequibo

March 20, 2025 – Police in Regional Division #2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam) are investigating a tragic incident that claimed the life of three-year-old Alaia Etwaroo, a preschool student from the Essequibo Coast.
The fatal accident occurred at approximately 17:20 hrs on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at Lot 98, ‘EX Mouth,’ Essequibo Coast.
According to police reports, Alaia lived at the residence with her mother, Saudia Hannif (28), a housewife, and her father, Ganesh Etwaroo (30), a rice farmer, along with other family members.
At the time of the incident, Alaia and her four-year-old sister, Sarfeena Etwaroo, were playing on the western side of the yard when their mother heard a loud noise coming from that area.
Upon investigating, Saudia Hannif discovered her daughter Alaia lying on the ground with a heavy metal gate on top of her.
Alaia was immediately picked up and was bleeding from a wound on her forehead. She was rushed to the Charity Public Hospital, but sadly, the doctor on duty pronounced her dead on arrival.
Police observed that a metal gate measuring approximately 10 feet in length and 6 feet in height had fallen to the ground. Bloodstains were also seen in the immediate area where the gate had collapsed.
Authorities have since launched an active investigation into the incident.
