12-Y-O Dies After Being Choked By Cousin During ‘Play Fight’

A tragic incident in Martyrs’ Ville, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, has led to the death of 12-year-old Chitrawattie Rohan, also known as “Fareena,” earlier today.
The girl reportedly died following an alleged choking incident involving her 13-year-old cousin.
According to family members, the incident occurred around 11:00hrs, while Fareena, a student of Beterverwagting Secondary School, and her cousin were engaged in what they described as “playfighting,” which involved choking each other as part of a game.
The situation took a grave turn when Fareena lost consciousness.
Her grandfather, Mohammed Jameer, who was not home at the time of the incident, returned to find Fareena unconscious.
He attempted to administer CPR, which briefly revived her, but she was unable to move. Jameer immediately took her to a nearby private clinic, only to find it closed. He then rushed her to the Beterverwagting Health Center, where she was pronounced dead by the attending health worker.
Jameer recounted the harrowing experience, saying, “Me na really know what happen, me come home and find she lay down” the distraught man said, noting that “She been alive at the time when me pick she up and put she in the car and rush she.”
A neighbour related that the children often engaged in rough play, including hitting and choking each other in jest.
Fareena’s mother, Fareeda Jameer, was informed of the incident by her son, who ran to their home a few houses away, telling her that “Fareena is dead.” Confused and alarmed, she rushed to her father’s house, only to find that Fareena was already being taken for medical attention.
The police have been notified, and the cousin involved in the incident has been taken into custody.
