The family of 22-year-old Daniel North is grappling with unbearable grief following a fatal accident along the Stanleytown Public Road, New Amsterdam, on Thursday afternoon. North, a motorcyclist of African descent from Berbice, succumbed to his injuries after a collision involving motorcycle CP 1385 and motorcar PLL 6600 around 4:30 pm.

His sister, Debbie North, said Daniel was preparing to return to his offshore job on November 24, unaware that tragedy would strike just days before his scheduled departure.

According to police, initial investigations indicate that the motorcar was travelling north along the western drive lane “at an alleged normal rate,” while the motorcycle was heading east along an access road on the western side “at an alleged fast rate” when it collided with the left front portion of the vehicle. Daniel was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital but died while receiving treatment.

Still visibly shaken, Debbie recounted her final encounter with her brother on the day before the accident.

“Oh gosh, Daniel… he came yesterday at the school and he come and ask for the car. So I said the car ain’t there… And he left. But I said, had I known—if the car was there—at least, I don’t know if this could have been prevented,” she said.

Debbie, heartbroken and frustrated, also expressed concern about the growing trend of bystanders filming tragedies instead of offering help.

“The police spoke to me and said that had he gotten out, his chances would have been better. But everybody was on their phone… Everybody sharing videos. And I mean, in a time like that…” she lamented.

Describing her younger brother as a helpful and lively soul, Debbie said Daniel was always willing to lend a hand.

“He was a very nice person… You could get him for two things: go to the shop, come back, do this. He was very jovial. He liked to joke around,” she recalled. “It seems like such a nightmare.”

Daniel sustained severe head injuries along with other trauma to his body.

The driver of the motorcar, a 56-year-old man from Lancaster Village, Corentyne, is currently receiving treatment at the New Amsterdam Hospital.

Police investigations into the fatal accident are ongoing.
