Willon Cameron launches groundbreaking Schools’ Basketball League

January 6 2025
In a thrilling development for youth sports, national head coach Willon Cameron is set to launch an exciting new schools’ basketball league, debuting on January 16 across various venues in Georgetown.
Cameron’s motivation for establishing this league is straightforward: to give young players in Guyana more opportunities to play basketball. “The simple thing is that I always wish we could be playing more games. We put in a lot of work, and we want our players to develop, but playing a maximum of 10 to 15 games a year really does nothing,” he expressed.
He added that the situation is even more critical for female players. “I’ve shared this idea many times, and this time I decided to engage other coaches who feel the same way.”
The league’s structure promises an engaging format, featuring six teams in its inaugural season. “Each team is going to play each other home and away, which totals 10 games,” Cameron explained. “That’s significant for us, as we typically only get about 10 games a year. To have an additional 10 games is a game changer. As we run this pilot season, we’ll assess and refine our approach, with an eye on incorporating more schools in the future.”
The league will kick off with a competitive lineup featuring Queen’s College, President’s College, St. Rose’s Secondary, St. Stanislaus College, Government Technical Institute (GTI), and Marian Academy. Don’t miss the action when games tip off on January 16.
