October 25 2024 – Linden Junior Isaacs, 32, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to the murder of his mother-in-law, 56-year-old Velma Pickering, in a violent attack on May 11, 2020, at Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Dead: Velma Pickering

Appearing before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court, Isaacs confessed to the killing and now awaits sentencing, scheduled for November 14, 2024. Isaacs, originally from Strathspey, ECD, admitted to attacking Pickering in her home around 2:30 p.m., using an ice pick to stab her approximately ten times.

The brutal assault unfolded as Pickering, who was home with her three-year-old grandson, tried to escape to a neighbor’s yard but collapsed on a nearby bridge.

Emergency responders transported her to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where she was pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination confirmed her death was due to a heart perforation from multiple stab wounds.

Isaacs attempted to flee but was captured by alert bystanders and handed over to the Sparendaam Police Station. Reports reveal that Pickering had often intervened to shield her daughter from years of abuse in her relationship with Isaacs.
