June 14 2026
The bodies of the two miners trapped in Saturday’s deadly mining pit collapse at St. Elizabeth Backdam, Mahdia, Region Eight, have been recovered.
The first body recovered was that of 32-year-old Franky Hussain of the North West District, Region One.
His body was pulled from the collapsed pit at approximately 3:14 p.m. on Sunday and transported to the Mahdia Hospital, where it was processed and pronounced dead.
Rescuers later located the second victim, 38-year-old Brazilian national Neunes Neunes Da Silva, and continued efforts to extract his body from the debris.
His remains were successfully recovered at approximately 4:37 p.m.
The two men became trapped on Saturday afternoon when sections of a 60-foot-deep mining pit collapsed while they were working underground. Several other workers escaped, while an excavator was also buried during the cave-in.
Police, workers, the mine operator and representatives of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission participated in the recovery operation as investigations into the fatal incident continue.
