Taxi Driver Granted Bail in Fatal Accident Case

September 18 2024 — A 27-year-old taxi driver, Dexroy Fredericks, was granted bail on Tuesday after being charged with causing death by dangerous driving, following a fatal accident on June 25, 2024.
The accident claimed the life of 54-year-old security guard, Celus Griffith.

Dead: Celus Griffith
Fredericks, who resides on Mandela Avenue, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleges that he drove hire car HD 1646 dangerously on the New Mandela to Eccles Interlink (Heroes Highway), resulting in the fatal collision with Griffith, who was cycling at the time.
Fredericks, a father of two, was represented by attorney Stacy Goodings, who requested bail, highlighting her client’s clean criminal record. However, the police prosecutor opposed bail due to the seriousness of the charge and concerns over whether Fredericks would return for trial.
Despite the opposition, Magistrate McGusty granted bail set at $350,000 under strict conditions, including that Fredericks report to the East La Penitence Police Station twice a month. The case has been adjourned to October 2, 2024.
The accident occurred at around 10:15 AM on the eastern carriageway of the New Mandela to Eccles Interlink, near Sheriff Security in Georgetown.
