Reg. One Resident sentenced to 12 years for attempted murder

Nigel Abrams, a 32-year-old resident of Black Water in the North West District, Region One (Barima-Waini), has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempted murder.
The sentence was handed down on Monday after Abrams pleaded guilty to the charge in the Demerara High Court.
Abrams admitted to wounding 19-year-old Ron Moonsammy with the intent to murder him on April 17, 2022.
The guilty plea came before Justice Peter Hugh, who initially postponed sentencing, to allow for a probation report, victim impact statements, and the submission of aggravating and mitigating factors by both prosecution and defence attorneys.
According to police reports, the incident occurred during a drinking session involving Abrams, his 17-year-old stepson Daniel Wilson, and Wilson’s cousin, Moonsammy.
An argument between Abrams and Wilson escalated, leading to violence.
When Moonsammy attempted to intervene to protect his cousin, Abrams turned on him, stabbing him in the chest and leaving him critically injured.
Prosecutor Caressa Henry represented the state in the case, while defence attorney Madan Kissoon advocated on Abrams’ behalf.
Moonsammy survived after receiving emergency care, but Wilson did not survive his injuries.
Abrams now awaits a separate trial for the murder of his stepson.
