An Opposition Member of Parliament is in custody following an alleged domestic violence incident at Moruca, North West District, Region One, on Wednesday evening.

The incident reportedly involved 31-year-old MP Deon LaCruz and his reputed wife at their residence.

According to police reports, an argument between the couple allegedly escalated into a physical confrontation. It is alleged that during the incident, a four-year-old child was assaulted, prompting the woman to intervene.

The woman further alleged that she was assaulted during the altercation and sustained injuries after being pushed to the ground, causing her to lose consciousness briefly.

She also claimed that the man later armed himself with a chopper and behaved in a manner that caused her to fear for her safety.

The matter was subsequently reported, and the woman was escorted for medical attention. LaCruz was later taken into custody as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Party acknowledged reports that its Member of Parliament had been detained in connection with allegations of domestic violence.

In a statement, the party said it treats all allegations of violence, particularly those involving women and children, with the utmost seriousness and supports a full, impartial and professional investigation.

WIN stated that there can be no justification for violence against women or children and emphasized that holders of public office have a responsibility to uphold the law and respect the dignity and safety of others.

The party further stated that while the matter remains under investigation, it maintains a zero-tolerance stance on domestic violence and will take appropriate action should the allegations be substantiated.
