Opposition demands Ministers’ resignations during parliament protest

July 27 2026
Opposition Members of Parliament are demanding the resignation of Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill and Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar, arguing that both ministers bear ministerial responsibility for the circumstances surrounding the maritime disaster.
The demonstration comes amid heightened political tensions following the MV Barima tragedy and other national issues that have dominated public discussion in recent days.
At today’s sitting of the National Assembly, Opposition MPs again called for the resignation of the two ministers.
This morning’s sitting was subsequently suspended by Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir.
Protesters outside the conference centre said the picketing exercise was intended to press for accountability in the wake of one of Guyana’s deadliest maritime disasters.
