National Toshaos Council Conference Commences

The National Toshaos Council (NTC) kicked off its five-day conference on Monday, with a strong focus on community development and the progress of Guyana’s Indigenous peoples.
The event began with a message from NTC Chairman, Toshao Derrick John, who called on leaders to prioritize the development of their communities and to collaborate closely with the national body to drive further progress.
Highlighting the significant transformations that have taken place over the past two years, Toshao John emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among Amerindians to achieve sustained growth and development.
Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai, also addressed the gathering, noting the government’s commitment to improving the lives of Indigenous communities.
She highlighted the distribution of 30,000 solar panel systems to remote areas, ensuring that even the most isolated communities have access to electricity. The government has also recognized the needs of communities that have not yet received these benefits, assuring that they too will be catered for in future initiatives.
Minister Sukhai further underscored the numerous opportunities that have been made available to Indigenous people, including scholarships and educational programs.
She also pointed to ongoing efforts to improve connectivity in the hinterland regions, with the government working to provide internet access to all, bridging the digital divide and fostering greater inclusion.
The five-day council event would see active participation from government ministers, including President Irfaan Ali, who are dedicated to engaging with Indigenous leaders and residents to discuss the way forward.
This commitment ensures that the Amerindian people are fully informed and involved in the decision-making processes that affect their communities.
In his remarks, President Ali reflected on the remarkable advancements in the Amerindian and hinterland regions since 1992.
He noted that these areas have become increasingly developed, with significant improvements in sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. The President emphasized that the achievements of today are the result of years of dedicated effort and development, transforming dreams into reality for many.
As the conference continues, the focus remains on ensuring that the voices of Amerindian leaders are heard and that their communities continue to benefit from the government’s development agenda.
