MoA to procure 40 mobile pumps to boost flood control

February 11 2025
The government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, is preparing to procure 40 hydroflo and mobile pumps as part of efforts to improve water flow and reduce flooding in vulnerable communities across Guyana.
The initiative was announced by Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha during the 2026 Budget Consideration of Estimates and Expenditure, where he explained that mobile pumping systems offer a more flexible and effective alternative to fixed pump stations, particularly in hard-to-service areas.
Once the 2026 National Budget is approved, the ministry is expected to advertise for the procurement of the pumps, after which installation will begin.
Minister Mustapha also reported that several pump stations have already been completed nationwide, including facilities at Barnwell, Adventure, Cozier, Andrew, Trafalgar, Montrose, Canal Number One, Liliendaal, Ogle, and Anna Regina.
Meanwhile, multiple pump station projects remain under construction at various stages. Meten-Meer-Zorg is 83 per cent complete, Belle Vue to Goed Fortuin stands at 29 per cent, Pouderoyen sluice and pump station at 89 per cent, A-Line pump station at 25 per cent, Jimbo/Grove at 78 per cent, and the Black Bush Polder pump station at 87 per cent.
The minister acknowledged delays at some sites, noting that setbacks at Meten-Meer-Zorg are expected to be resolved within the next two months. At Letter Kenny, the original contract was terminated due to performance concerns, and the project has since been retendered, with a new contractor expected to begin work shortly.
To improve project delivery and accountability, the Ministry of Agriculture has taken action against underperforming contractors. In the final quarter of 2025, approximately 30 contractors were flagged to the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board as delinquent, with the ministry indicating it will no longer conduct business with them.
The pump procurement and ongoing infrastructure upgrades form part of broader government efforts to strengthen flood resilience and drainage capacity nationwide.
