Mechanic Fined, Minibus Driver Jailed for Dangerous Driving

Two men were sentenced in separate cases of dangerous driving when they appeared before Magistrate Shivani Lalaram at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
In the first matter, 25-year-old mechanic Shemuel Douglas of Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara, was charged with dangerous driving and exceeding the speed limit. Douglas, who is employed with Farm Supplies Limited, was arrested in relation to an incident that occurred on Monday, December 8, 2025, along the Nelson Mandela–Eccles Interlink, involving 28-year-old screen printer and head press operator T’Shaun Nicolas Thompson of Atlantic Ville, Greater Georgetown.
Douglas pleaded guilty to both charges. For dangerous driving, he was fined $50,000 or ten weeks’ imprisonment, and his driver’s licence was suspended for one year, effective January 7, 2026. For exceeding the speed limit, he was fined $40,000 or eight weeks’ imprisonment.
In a separate case, 38-year-old minibus operator Martin Hunte of Lot 52 La Bonne Intention Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, was charged with dangerous driving following an incident on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at about 18:45 hrs on the Public Road, Kitty, Georgetown. The matter involved an 11-year-old Grade Seven student from Kitty.
Hunte pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment.
