Court orders removal of vendors around GPHC

Vendors operating around the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) have been ordered to vacate the area by May 31, 2026, following a High Court ruling aimed at clearing obstructions surrounding the country’s main public health institution.
The court directed the Mayor and City Council to remove all vendors, stalls, carts, and other encumbrances from several streets bordering the hospital, including sections of Lamaha Street, East Street, New Market Street, and Middle Street.
The legal action was brought by GPHC through attorneys Sase Gunraj and Jayaramm Sanasie, who argued that the continued presence of vendors has been creating major disruptions to the hospital’s daily operations.
According to documents filed before the court, the obstructions have been affecting the free movement of patients, staff, and emergency vehicles entering and leaving the medical facility. The hospital also raised concerns about garbage and debris being left behind by vendors along nearby pavements and roadways.
GPHC, Guyana’s largest public hospital, reportedly made several attempts over the past year to have the issue addressed through correspondence sent to City Hall in April and May of 2025, and again in January 2026.
While the Mayor and City Council had reportedly indicated in 2024 that steps would be taken to resolve the issue, the hospital maintained that no meaningful action was carried out, prompting the matter to be taken before the court.
The ruling now places responsibility on City authorities to ensure the area surrounding the hospital is cleared before the end of the month.
