Constitutional consultations with opposition will proceed – President Ali

August 18 2026
President Dr Irfaan Ali says consultations with the Opposition will proceed as required as the Government moves to fill and renew positions on key constitutional bodies.
Speaking at a press conference earlier today, President Ali said the consultations form part of the constitutional process and assured that he will fulfil his responsibilities in accordance with the Constitution.
He said Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance Gail Teixeira has already been working to communicate with the Opposition Leader’s Office on the appointments and other related matters.
President Ali said his intention is to discharge his mandate in accordance with the constitutional framework and fulfil the responsibilities attached to his office.
Consultations between the President and Opposition Leader are required under the Constitution for certain appointments to constitutional commissions and remain an important part of Guyana’s governance framework.
Guyana’s Opposition Leader, businessman Azruddin Mohamed, is currently under US sanctions and is facing extradition proceedings to the United States.
