Family still seeking justice for Ranella Benfield

April 20 2026
More than eight years after the brutal killing of 17-year-old Ranella Benfield, her family continues to live with unanswered questions.
In December 2017, the quiet community of Beterverwagting was shaken by the discovery of the teenager’s body in a nearby cemetery at Triumph.
The young woman, described by relatives as vibrant and full of promise, had been reported missing just days earlier after leaving work.
At the time of her death, Benfield was on the verge of adulthood just weeks away from her 18th birthday. She worked as a receptionist at a local call center and was known among family and friends for her warm personality and ambition. Her parents recall a daughter who brought light into their lives, someone who had dreams of building a meaningful future.
In a recent video interview produced by Mordok London, her parents spoke candidly about the daughter they lost. They shared fond memories of her laughter, her kindness, and the close bond they once enjoyed—contrasted sharply by the enduring grief that followed her death.
On December 9, 2017, Benfield left home for work as usual. She was last seen later that evening by coworkers as she boarded transportation to return home.
When she did not return, relatives initially believed she may have stayed with a cousin.
Two days later, on December 11, their worst fears were confirmed.
Her body was discovered in a cemetery less than a mile from her home. The condition in which she was found pointed to a violent and deliberate attack. Reports indicated that she suffered severe facial injuries consistent with blunt force trauma. Personal belongings were found near the scene, but her phone was missing.
Despite the seriousness of the crime, the investigation has yet to yield a conviction. Several individuals were detained and questioned in the early stages, but no charges were ever filed. Authorities had suggested that the teenager may have known her attacker or attackers, raising suspicions of a targeted act rather than a random crime.
A coroner’s inquest was later initiated in an effort to bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding her death. However, proceedings were disrupted and ultimately stalled, leaving critical questions unresolved.
In the years since, Benfield’s family has endured not only the pain of loss but also the frustration of an investigation that has failed to provide answers.
At one point, even family members themselves were questioned by police before being released without charge an experience that added further strain during an already traumatic time.
In their recent interview, her parents expressed a mixture of grief, exhaustion, and determination. Eight years later, they say the pain has not faded. Instead, it has evolved into a persistent longing for justice and accountability.
They spoke about how the tragedy has affected them individually emotionally, mentally, and even within their family structure. The absence of closure continues to weigh heavily, as each passing year serves as a reminder that Ranella’s case remains unsolved.
Today, the murder of Ranella Benfield stands as one of many unresolved cases that continue to trouble communities across Guyana.
For her family, however, it is not just a statistic it is a daily reality.
