Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh has challenged the board of the National Insurance Scheme to return the institution to financial viability. This call came as the Minister who has responsibility for finance met with the newly installed board,  the Ministry said in a statement, “over the last several years, we have seen the progressive decline of the Scheme. The NIS faces a number of challenges at the macro level and has come under severe threat, Minister Singh pointed out that he admitted work has to be done to “return the Scheme to long term financial viability”.

The Minister also pointed to the challenges of paying pensioners as he said that government is concerned about the number of complaints about delays contributors have experienced. To this end, Singh tasked the Board with addressing this issue urgently.

The Board is headed by Ramesh Persaud, former Private Sector Commission Chairman and includes members Ms. Holly Greaves, General Manager of the NIS, Mr. Faizal Jaffarally, Ms. Yvonne Pearson, Mr. Maurice Solomon, Mr. Satanand Gopie, Ms. Kathleen Jason, Mr. Seepaul Narine and Ms. Jillian Burton-Persaud.
