Father’s deadly rampage leaves 8 children slain

April 20 2026

A devastating act of domestic violence has left eight children dead in what authorities describe as one of the most horrific family related mass killings in recent U.S. history.

The suspect, 31 year old Shamar Elkins, is accused of killing seven of his own children along with another child during a violent rampage that unfolded across multiple locations in Shreveport, Louisiana.

According to police reports, the killings occurred early on April 19, 2026, in the Cedar Grove neighborhood, where Elkins carried out a series of shootings across at least two homes. The victims ranging in age from approximately 3 to 11 years old were found in what authorities described as a “domestic incident” spanning multiple crime scenes.

Seven of the children were confirmed to be Elkins’ own, while the eighth victim was a relative. Investigators say most of the children were shot while they slept, underscoring the brutality of the attack.

Two women believed to be the mothers of the children were also shot and left critically injured. A teenage boy survived the massacre after jumping from a roof in an attempt to escape, sustaining serious injuries.

Elkins, a former member of the Louisiana Army National Guard, had reportedly been experiencing significant personal turmoil prior to the incident. Family members indicated he had struggled with mental health issues and was facing a pending divorce.

Authorities believe the killings were rooted in domestic conflict, though the exact motive remains under investigation. Officials have characterized the case as a “family annihilation,” a term used when an individual kills close family members.

Following the shootings, Elkins fled the scene, carjacked a vehicle, and led police on a chase into nearby Bossier City. The pursuit ended in a confrontation with law enforcement, where Elkins was shot and killed.

Authorities have identified the victims as eight young children, including multiple siblings. The loss has sent shockwaves through the community, with officials describing the event as one of the worst tragedies in the city’s history.

Community and National Reaction

Local and national leaders have expressed profound grief and outrage. Shreveport’s mayor called the incident an unprecedented tragedy, while lawmakers and advocacy groups renewed calls for stronger interventions around domestic violence and mental health support.

The case has also reignited broader national conversations around gun violence in the United States, particularly incidents involving children and family members.

Law enforcement agencies, including Louisiana State Police, continue to investigate the sequence of events and underlying causes. Authorities have emphasized that while warning signs may have existed, the scale and severity of the violence have left even seasoned investigators stunned.
