Man Remanded for Killing Brother on New Year’s Day

January 7 2025 – 27-Y-O, Deepak Bacchus, has been remanded to prison after being charged with the
manslaughter of his older brother, 41-year-old Kiran Bacchus.
The tragic incident unfolded in the siblings’ hometown of Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice (WCB),
during the early hours of January 1, 2025.
Deepak, who appeared unrepresented by an attorney, faced Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir at the
Blairmont Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
He was not required to enter a plea to the charge. Despite manslaughter being a bailable offence,
the court denied bail due to the gravity of the allegation.
The matter has been adjourned to January 28, 2025, for further hearings.
The altercation reportedly occurred at around 1:30 a.m. on January 1, 2025, at Deepak’s residence.
According to police reports, Kiran Bacchus, who was under the influence of alcohol, became upset
after learning that Deepak had barred Kiran’s wife, Seeta Churchand, from entering their mother’s
home. Their mother, Sookranie Bacchus, resides on the same property.
Angered by the situation, Kiran confronted Deepak at their mother’s home. The confrontation
escalated into a physical fight between the brothers.
Witnesses reported that during the struggle, both men fell to the ground. Kiran sustained a head
injury, which left him bleeding from his nose and in a semi-conscious state.
Efforts were made to save Kiran’s life as he was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
However, he tragically passed away while receiving medical treatment.
A post-mortem examination conducted on last week revealed that Kiran died from asphyxia caused
by aspirated gastric content, compounded by blood in his airway.
