Cop turns self in after hit and crash that killed elderly man

Cop turn himself in after hit and crash that killed elderly man

Police Constable Joel Simon who is attached to the Brickdam Police Station, turned himself over to the police on Sunday half-hour after the owner of a car he, Simon was driving, showed up at the Sparendaam Police Station to claim ownership of the vehicle, GPP 8699.

The vehicle on Saturday evening struck down 50-year-old Navindra Ramnarine of 3rd Field Caneville, Grove, East Bank Demerara. After the accident, Simon fled the scene leaving his victim behind as well as the vehicle which was involved in the crash.

On Monday the police in a statement indicated that at 18:00 hrs Ashton Barker of Norton Street, Werk-en- Rust reported to the police and claimed ownership of the vehicle. Shortly after that at about “18:25 hrs, a 24-year-old police constable of Mahaica who is stationed at the Brickdam Police Station turned himself in with his attorney and claimed to be the driver of said motor pickup GPP 8699 which was involved in the said accident”. The police statement claimed.

On Saturday evening just about 19:00hrs Navindra Ramnarine was crossing the road when the pickup collided with him as he was attempting to cross the road.

Ramnarine fell on the roadway and received injuries about his body, he was picked up in an unconscious condition and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
